"The Next Time"

by Katy

Every week the Legacy house battles evil and prevails. But what happens if
they don't prevail? What would happen if something went wrong?

"We rise by things that are 'neath our feet;
By what we have mastered of good and gain;
By the pride deposed and the passion slain,
And the vanquished ills that we hourly meet.

We hope, we aspire, we resolve, we trust,
When the morning calls us to life and light,
But our hearts grow weary, and , ere the night,
Our lives are travailing the sordid dust.

Wings for the angels, but feet for men!
We may borrow the wings to find the way-
We may hope, and resolve, and aspire and pray,
But our feet must rise, or we fall again.

Only in dreams is a ladder thrown
From the weary earth to the sapphire walls.
But the dream departs, and the vision falls,
And the sleeper wakes on his pillow of stone.

Heaven is not reached at a single bound
But we build the ladder by which we rise
From the lowly earth to the vaulted skies."

Josiah Gilbert Holland, from "Gradatim"

[Woman]
Please state your full name and post.

[Nick]
What for? You already know all of that.

[Woman]
Please just answer the question for the tape, Mr. Boyle.

[Nick]
Nicholas Patrick Boyle, San Francisco Legacy House, San
Francisco, California, the United Sta-

[Woman]
That will be quite enough.

[Nick]
Are you sure? I can give you the names of all my grade
school teachers if you want.

[Woman]
The sooner you cooperate, the sooner this will be over and
done with.

[Nick]
Yeah, sure.

[Woman]
Please just relax, Mr. Boyle. This is not an investigation
nor is it a crucifixion.

[Nick]
Isn't it? You people just want someone to hang for this.

[Woman]
That's not so. I'm just here to talk to you. To find out
what happened in your own words. I know how hard this has been on all of
you.

[Nick]
Well, what exactly do you want to know?

[Woman]
Who was it that answered the front door the night you and
Father Callaghan went to see the Corvers?

[Nick]
Jordan Corver.

[Woman]
The little boy?

[Nick]
Yes.

[Woman]
Was he the Corvers only child?

[Nick]
Yes he was.

**********

[Alex]
Alexandra Danielle Moreau, San Francisco Legacy House.

[Man]
You're head researcher for this house, are you not?

[Alex]
Not exactly, we're all involved in research here.

[Man]
But you do most of it, correct?

[Alex]
I guess I do.

[Man]
Did you research the Corver family?

[Alex]
Yes I did. They were good people. Sarah, the mother, was
an assistant in a legal firm. Her husband, Earl, was an environmental
attorney in the same firm. They had clean background. There was nothing
sinister in their family histories.

[Man]
Why did you find it necessary to research them in the first
place?

[Alex]
Excuse me?

[Man]
Miss Stone and Miss Harrison had already done the research
back in Pittsburgh. Did you think they were incompetent?

[Alex]
No! I just thought I might be able to find something they
missed.

[Man]
Is that right?

[Alex]
Yes.

[Man]
Tell me about the little boy.

[Alex]
Jordan.

[Man]
He was five years old?

[Alex]
No, eight.

**********

[Philip]
Father Philip Joseph Callaghan. San Francisco Legacy House.

[Man]
You seem nervous, Father.

[Philip]
I'm a priest. I'm used to people confessing to me, not the
other way around.

[Man]
Are you saying you have something to confess?

[Philip]
No. That's not what I meant.

[Man]
Oh, come on, Father. Everyone has something to confess,
especially a priest.

[Philip]
Well, I don't.

[Man]
Fine. Let me ask you then, how many times did you perform
an exorcism at the Corver home?

[Philip]
Three.

[Man]
And nothing happened?

[Philip]
No.

[Man]
Did you ever consider calling the Church for help?

[Philip]
No, I thought I could handle things.

[Man]
After three exorcisms and no results, you still thought you
could handle things?

[Philip]
Yes, I did. I had faith that all would work out in the end.

[Man]
It didn't though, did it? At least not for Marla Stone and
Christine Harrison. Oh yeah, and not to mention the entire Corver family.

[Philip]
No.

[Man]
All right then. Let's go back a bit. Miss Stone and Miss
Harrison appeared at the Luna Foundation two weeks ago, asking for the
assistance of you and your colleagues.

[Philip]
Yes. The two were from the Pittsburgh Legacy house. They'd
been investigating a family that was being terrorized by a poltergeist.

[Man]
Yet they failed, didn't they?

[Philip]
No, the family just couldn't take the strain anymore so
they moved out here to San Francisco.

[Man]
But it wasn't long before the violent occurrences started
again, was it?

[Philip]
No. It followed them here. Marla and Christine flew out
immediately.

[Man]
And so your team became involved. Did you go and see the
family right away?

[Philip]
Yes, Marla and Christine were already there. Nick and I
went out.

[Man]
Where were the others at the time?

[Philip]
Rachel and Alex were here. Derek was in Madagascar.

[Man]
So, basically, you were all on your own to handle a violent
and destructive poltergeist, while the head of this house was off in
Africa. No wonder things went wrong.**********

[Woman]
Sit down and make yourself comfortable. I'll need your full
name and location please.

[Rachel]
Rachel Ellen Corrigan. San Francisco.

[Woman]
You are a psychiatrist, are you not?

[Rachel]
Yes I am.

[Woman]
Did you interview the Corver family?

[Rachel]
I talked to them, yes.

[Woman]
As patients?

[Rachel]
In a manner of speaking.

[Woman]
What was your initial impression of them?

[Rachel]
Well, they were a normal, typical family.

[Woman]
They weren't what I would call normal, Dr. Corrigan.

[Rachel]
No, you're right.

[Woman]
What was your impression of the boy?

[Rachel]
He was a sweet little boy.

[Woman]
Yet you thought he was behind these occurrences, not a
poltergeist, isn't that right?

[Rachel]
Yes. A lot of poltergeist occurrences are found out to be
the result of telekinetic power, focusing primarily on the one causing it.
Whether for attention or amusement. Sometimes the victim doesn't even know
they're responsible.

[Woman]
That's all fine and well, Dr. Corrigan. But the fact
remains that it wasn't just the little boy being terrorized here, was it?
The parents were afflicted as well. So was Miss Harrison and Miss Stone
when they tried to intervene. And you're own team was attacked when they
tried to help the Corvers, isn't that right?

[Rachel]
Yes.

[Woman]
So your assessment was wrong.

[Rachel]
Hold on a minute. I made a diagnosis based on the evidence
that I'd seen and the facts and case histories that I had read about.

[Woman]
You had a lot of opposition from Mr. Boyle regarding your
assessment, did you not?

[Rachel]
He thought I was misreading the situation.

[Woman]
You and Mr. Boyle had a heated argument concerning Jordan
Corver.

[Rachel]
Yes we did. He was very upset at the time.

[Woman]
I see. Well, when was it you realized that you may have
been wrong?

[Rachel]
When Marla was killed.

[Woman]
Did you feel like it was your fault?

[Rachel]
No I did not.

[Woman]
What about when Miss Harrison was killed not two hours
after Miss Stone? Did you feel at fault then?

[Rachel]
No!

[Woman]
Well, from what I hear, everyone else did.

**********

[Man]
Your name is Derek Allen Rayne? And you're the head of the
San Francisco Legacy house, founder of the Luna Foundation and the Winston
Rayne Hall of Antiquities, so named for your father, is that correct?

[Derek]
Yes.

[Man]
You were on a dig in Madagascar when the surrounding events
occured, were you not?

[Derek]
Yes I was.

[Man]
Do you think the outcome would have been different had you
been here?

[Derek]
I don't know the answer to that question and neither does
anyone else.

[Man]
I see. Don't you feel responsible?

[Derek]
Of course I do! Five people are dead and...

[Man]
And you weren't here. You were out and about, enjoying
yourself in Madagascar.

[Derek]
That's not how it was. My team kept in touch with me on a
regular basis.

[Man]
Is that so? Marla Stone was only twenty, and Christine
Harrison was only twenty-six. When were you notified of their deaths, Dr.
Rayne?

[Derek]
Alex called me last Wednesday.

[Man]
Wednesday? They were killed Monday morning. Your team
waited two days to call you?

[Derek]
They were preoccupied.

[Man]
Too preoccupied to tell you that two Legacy members had
lost their lives?

[Derek]
Wait just a minute! What are you implying? That my team
had something to do with it? That they're at fault?

[Man]
No, of course not. I'm just unclear as to their actions
last week.

[Derek]
Let's get something strait right now. My people work hard.
They put their lives on the line every single day and I stand behind them
and their actions one hundred percent.

[Man]
Too bad you weren't standing behind them last week. Five
people might still be alive right now.

[Derek]
You bastard-

[Man]
Dr. Rayne, I'm not here to get into name calling. I just
want some answers. Marla Stone was pretty young to be heading an
investigation, wasn't she?

[Derek]
It was her first assignment, Christine was was her backup.

[Man]
Quite a shame that two young women are gone. Don't you
feel bad about it?

[Derek]
Of course I do!

[Man]
Guilty?

**********

[Woman]
Did you notice anything unusual about the Corvers?

[Nick]
You mean aside from the fact that they were being
terrorized by a poltergeist?

[Woman]
That's not what I meant. Did you notice anything about
them firsthand?

[Nick]
Fear. They were all terrified. Jordan cowered behind his
mother the entire time. The parents looked like they hadn't slept or eaten
in months.

[Woman]
You took to the little boy right away, didn't you?

[Nick]
He was a good kid. And I know what it's like to live in fear.

[Woman]
You're talking about your experience as a Navy S.E.A.L., right?

[Nick]
Yeah.

[Woman]
How did you feel when Dr. Corrigan blamed Jordan for the
occurrences?

[Nick]
Angry. She was wrong. Jordan was a terrified little boy
who was being abused by an unseen entity. His parents were attacked,
Philip and I were attacked. Marla and Christine were attacked. And she
comes along and said it was the kid's fault.

[Woman]
You two had a serious argument?

[Nick]
Yeah, I told her that she must not remember what it was
like being a victim or she would never have been acting that way.

[Woman]
What was her response?

[Nick]
She told me I didn't have any idea what it was like to be a
victim, that I didn't know what I was talking about.

[Woman]
What did you say to her?

[Nick]
I don't know, I don't remember. Not much after that.

[Woman]
You don't know? You don't remember? Come on, Mr. Boyle.
The argument lasted for quite a while.

[Nick]
So what? What do you care what was said? She was angry at
me and I was angry at her. We said stupid things. The argument was over.

[Woman]
All right fine. What about Marla and Christine?

[Nick]
What about them?

[Woman]
You and everyone else blamed Rachel for their deaths.

[Nick]
That's a lie, we did not.

[Woman]
If she had been able to assess the situation correctly from
the beginning, maybe five people would still be alive right now.

[Nick]
Yeah, and if JFK had just moved his body over three inches,
he'd still be alive right now. And if Hitler had just been standing a few
feet closer to that briefcase he would have died in that bombing and saved
a lot more people's lives. If I'd had toast instead of pancakes for
breakfast that morning I'd have been a little more light footed and I'd
have been able to get to Marla before that thing pushed her out of a ten
story window! If! If! If!

[Woman]
Like I said, if Dr. Corrigan had been able to assess the
situation correctly then they would be alive.

**********

[Man]
What about Dr. Rayne?

[Alex]
What about him?

[Man]
You did call him with the details ?

[Alex]
Yes. He felt we could handle the investigation so he
stayed on in Madagascar.

[Man]
And did you?

[Alex]
What?

[Man]
Handle the situation?

[Alex]
To the best of our abilities.

[Man]
Right. Tell me, were you present when Marla Stone was killed?

[Alex]
Yes.

[Man]
How did it happen?

[Alex]
The boy was being attacked. Philip tried to intervene but
he was thrown across the room. Nick ran to his side.

[Man]
Where were you?

[Alex]
Trying to keep the boy's mother from getting in the way
and getting hurt. Jordan was being bitten and Marla screamed at the thing
to stop. Philip tried exorcising it. He tried several times but it just
made that thing more angry.

[Man]
What happened after that?

[Alex]
Marla took a step forward towards Jordan. Then it was
just like Marla's body was lifted in the air. And she went crashing through
the window.

[Man]
The Corvers lived on the tenth floor of the apartment building?

[Alex]
Yes. Nick and Christine ran to the window but I could tell,
Marla was dead.

[Man]
It wasn't long after that, maybe two hours, that Miss
Harrison was killed as well?

[Alex]
Yes. She was.

[Man]
Why didn't you call Dr. Rayne immediately after Miss
Stone's death? Or after Miss Harrison's for that matter?

[Alex]
I don't know, we weren't thinking. Things were out of
control. We just didn't think of it at the time.

[Man]
No, I can see you didn't. You also weren't thinking when
you left the Corvers alone the next day, were you?

**********

[Man]
Father Callaghan, help me with something here. Every time
you performed an exorcism, the entity grew increasingly violent. Why did
you keep on performing them?

[Philip]
I felt as if the entity was weakening, which was why it was
becoming more and more violent. It knew it was in danger, that we would
stop it.

[Man]
That's very funny, Father. Seeing as how it destroyed two
Legacy members and the Corver family. You were performing one of your
exorcisms when it tossed Miss Stone out the window and to the alley below,
weren't you?

[Philip]
Yes, I was.

[Man]
You must feel guilty about that.

[Philip]
I don't. I didn't kill her.

[Man]
No, of course you didn't. You just pissed off a
poltergeist and it killed her.

[Philip]
If that's the way you see things.

[Man]
What I see or think isn't important, Father. I'm trying to
figure out what it is you and your colleagues see and think. Tell me what
happened after that, when Christine Harrison was killed.

[Philip]
Alex called Rachel and told her to come to the Corvers
apartment immediately.

[Man]
She called Dr. Corrigan, but not Dr. Rayne?

[Philip]
No. He couldn't have done anything from Madagascar.

[Man]
That's not the point. He should have been notified as soon
as Marla had been killed.

[Philip]
Maybe he should have. But he wasn't.

[Man]
And what did Dr. Corrigan do when she got there?

[Philip]
She was upset about Marla's death. She felt that she had
made a mistake in judgment.

[Man]
How comforting that will be to Marla's family. Was Dr.
Corrigan present at the time of Christine's death?

[Philip]
We all were.

[Man]
So, how did it happen?

[Philip]
Christine and Rachel were arguing over Marla's death. Nick
was holding the little boy and trying to comfort him. The boy's mother and
father were in shock and I was trying to soothe them as best I could.

[Man]
Where was Alex?

[Philip]
She was trying to intermediate between Rachel and Christine.

[Man]
Is that when the poltergeist made its presence known?

[Philip]
Yes. There was a foul-smelling odor in the room and Jordan
began to cry. That's when Christine was killed. She made a strange gagging
sound and toppled over. Rachel tried to save her but it was if Christine's
life was choked right out of her body and all we could do was watch. The
boy started to scream and Nick screamed that he was taking the boy and
leaving.

[Man]
He was going to take the child out of there, to the Legacy
house?

[Philip]
Yes. But Jordan was ripped from his hands by Sarah.

[Man]
The boy's mother?

[Philip]
Yes. That's when Nick was attacked.

**********

[Woman]
Christine Harrison was choked to death?

[Rachel]
Yes. I tried to save her. I tried so hard. She accused me
of being the one responsible for Marla's death. If I had read the situation
correctly and we had moved the Corvers to the Legacy house like Marla had
wanted...I tried so hard. I was not going to lose Christine as well....

[Woman]
But she died. And not soon after that Nick was viscously
attacked by the entity after trying to take Jordan out of the apartment.

[Rachel]
Yes. It pitched him around the room. And then it stopped
and I ran to see if Nick was okay.

[Woman]
How badly was he injured?

[Rachel]
A few broken ribs and facial abrasions. We all just sat
there stunned. We wanted to take the Corvers out of that apartment
immediately but the parents refused.

[Woman]
They refused?

[Rachel]
Yes. They thought since it had followed them from
Pittsburgh it would follow them to the island. They didn't want to run
away. They just wouldn't leave. They just wouldn't LEAVE!!

[Woman]
They were all killed the next day.

[Rachel]
They should have left with us. Philip and I took Nick to a
hospital. I told Philip to stay with Alex and the Corvers but he didn't
want to leave Nick. We went to the hospital and left Alex alone with the
Corvers.

**********

[Derek]
I sensed danger. I sensed an overwhelming danger.

[Man]

And you did nothing.

[Derek]
My people weren't in need of a babysitter! They are
perfectly capable and I thought they could handle it.

[Man]
Then you, as well as everyone else involved, made a gross
error in judgment.

[Derek]
I resent that remark.

[Man]
You can resent it all you want Dr. Rayne. It won't make it
any less of a truth. Father Callaghan was stated as saying that he didn't
think you could do anything from where you were at the time. Do you believe
that to be true?

[Derek]
I am not going to make an assumption based on Philip's
feelings. No one can know what may or may not have happened if I had or
had not been there!

[Man]
Oh, but you can't tell me you haven't thought about it many
times. I can see it on your face as plain as day.

[Derek]
Of course I've thought about it. Just as I have thought
about everything that has happened in my life and what would have happened
if I had acted differently.

[Man]
Are you talking about the death of another member of the
Legacy? One of your own?

[Derek]
You already know the answer to that question. There isn't
a day that goes by that I don't think about Julia and what might have
happened if I had kept us all together that night.

[Man]
It's hard, isn't it? To think there might have been
something you could have done.

[Derek]
Everyone has felt that way at some point in their lives.
It's part of our existence as human beings, to feel the agony at what might
have been.

[Man]
Dr. Rayne, you might want to tell your colleagues that.

**********

[Woman]
Philip and Rachel took you to the hospital after you were
attacked. Were you conscious?

[Nick]
No, or I never would have let them take me out of there.

[Woman]
Do you feel you might have been able to stop the Corvers
deaths had you stayed?

[Nick]
How the hell should I know? I just know that they
shouldn't have been left alone. Alex should never have left them. We never
should have left them.

[Woman]
Just like you and Derek never should have left Julia.

[Nick]
No.

[Woman]
So what if you had stayed with Julia that night? Then you
both would have been killed. And if you all would have stayed with the
Corvers, then all of you would have died in that fire. You're alive for a
reason.

[Nick]
What the hell is this? One minute you're trying to tell me
it's our fault they're all dead and now you're trying to make me feel
better?

[Woman]
It was never my intention to make you feel like it was your
fault. It was never my intention to blame anyone for this. We're here for
you and your colleagues. How many cases have you worked on? Hundreds? For
the most part they've pretty much all worked out. Your Legacy house has
the reputation for being one of the most esteemed and most highly regarded
branch in the Western division. But you people really didn't think you
could solve every case or save everyone you've ever worked on. Things go
wrong in every Legacy house. And now things have gone wrong for your team
and I'm here to make you see that it happened, deal with it, grieve, mourn,
and GET OVER IT. Because I'm going to tell you, Mr. Boyle, it won't be the
last time that something like this is going to happen. You cannot save the
entire world. You just can't.

[Nick]
Maybe I can't. But I can sure as hell make sure that the
next time I come across something like this, things will be different. In
fact, I'm gonna make damn sure that there won't be a next time.

[Woman]
I will ask you this one more time. Do you think your team
was responsible for what happened?

[Nick]
No. We did everything we possibly could have done.

[Woman]
Thank you Mr. Boyle, that will be all. This interview is over.

[Nick]
Over? That's it?

[Woman]
That's it. My advice to you: go talk to your colleagues.
You all need each other now more than ever.

**********

[Man]
Why did you leave the Corvers alone in their apartment?

[Alex]
I couldn't get a hold of Philip or Rachel. I remembered
that there was an old book back at the house on demonic entities. The book
had ancient prayers and exorcisms in it, I thought we could use them. I
thought it might be the way to get rid of this thing.

[Man]
So you left them alone.

[Alex]
I did. I told them that I had figured out a way to possibly
stop this poltergeist. They told me to go, they told me to go and I
listened to them.

[Man]
You're a psychic, Miss Moreau. Didn't you sense anything at all?

[Alex]
No. I was just so excited and so overwhelmed. I thought I
could stop this. They told me they would be okay for a few hours. They told
me to go...

[Man]
You went back and found the book. When you returned to the
apartment building it was ablaze. Father Callaghan and Dr. Corrigan showed
up not seconds after you did.

[Alex]
The fire department was there. They had gotten almost
everyone out of the building.

[Man]
Everyone but the Corvers.

[Alex]
They were trapped inside and no one could get to them.
Their bodies were identified later on.

[Man]
Miss Moreau?

[Alex]
Why did I have to leave them alone? Why did I have to go
back for that book?

[Man]
You thought it was the right thing to do at the time, I'm sure.

[Alex]

Well, it wasn't! I killed them!

[Man]
Do you blame Dr. Corrigan for the deaths of Miss Stone and
Miss Harrison?

[Alex]
That's different, she couldn't have known what would have
happened.

[Man]
And neither could you. There was a certain risk involved,
there always is. But ultimately you weighed the risks and realized there
was a chance you could have saved them. If you hadn't tried you'd be dead
with them. And then Dr. Corrigan and Father Callaghan would blame
themselves for leaving you there.

[Alex]
It wouldn't have been their fault!

[Man]
It wasn't your fault. You need to realize that things
happen and this was one of those things that just happened. No one was to
blame. Everyone acted in a way they would have reacted in any other
situation. And if you dwell on this, Miss Moreau, then you might as well
quit and leave the Legacy right now because I'm telling you, you aren't the
only team this has happened to. And this isn't the only time something like
this will happen.

[Alex]
Yes it is. The next time will be different. Next time I
won't go against my instincts.

[Man]
You could not have done anything different. And if you had,
the outcome might still have been the same regardless. You need to face
this and then get over it.

[Alex]
I'll never get over it.

[Man]
No, but you will put it behind you. You have to.

**********

[Man]
When you and Dr. Corrigan arrived, you knew before you had
even talked to the fire chief that the Corvers were dead, didn't you?

[Philip]
I did. I saw the look on Alex's face and I knew she hadn't
been there at the time.

[Man]
Did she tell you where she had gone? And why?

[Philip]
Yes.

[Man]
Did it make you angry that she had left them?

[Philip]
No. I was angry at myself for not having thought of that
damn book in the first place. If I had then she would not have had to leave
the Corvers to go and get it.

[Man]
No, she just would have died in the fire with them.

[Philip]
No!

[Man]
How do you know that? How do you know?!

[Philip]
I don't!

[Man]
Exactly! You think because you are a priest, a man of God,
that you can stop every evil you come in contact with? That you know what
that evil is thinking?

[Philip]
If you only knew...

[Man]
Knew what?

[Philip]
Nothing. You would never understand it.

[Man]
You are not above God! There wasn't anything you could
have or could not have done that would have changed the outcome. Don't you
understand? What if you had done things differently? Then Dr. Rayne would
have come home from Madagascar to an empty house because you all would have
been dead. You are a priest, and you know that things happen for a reason,
reasons that we will never understand. Good things happen to bad people
and bad things happen to good people. And what can you do?

[Philip]
Pray.

[Man]
Pray? What for?

[Philip]
For the next time something like this happens.

[Man]
Or you could just pray that something like this never
happens again.

[Philip]
I could. Excuse me, but are we finished? I need to be
with my friends. They need me.

[Man]
Yes they do.

**********

[Rachel]
I suppose I'm dealing with it as best as I can.

[Woman]
You're no stranger to tragedy, Dr. Corrigan. I bet you
blamed yourself for the deaths of your son and husband, didn't you?

[Rachel]
I told my husband to go pick up our daughter at school
because I just was too busy. Connor went along for the ride. And look what
happened.

[Woman]
Just like you took Nick to the hospital and you let Philip
go with you, leaving Alex alone.

[Rachel]
Yes.

[Woman]
How did you know that Alex would leave? How did you know
that the entity would kill the Corver family?

[Rachel]
I didn't.

[Woman]
No, you didn't. And there was no way you could have. They
are dead, true. But you still have your friends. And you still have your
daughter. You are not completely alone, and you are not responsible.

[Rachel]
It just hurts so much!

[Woman]
Of course it does! That's what being human means. To feel
blame, to feel guilt at being alive. But I shouldn't have to tell you that
at all, Dr. Corrigan. You know that! What would you tell a patient under
the same circumstances? The same thing I'm telling you now.

[Rachel]
I know. I just don't know what to do.

[Woman]
How do you think your friends are doing right now? Don't
you think they're feeling the same way you are?

[Rachel]
They blame me.

[Woman]
Do you blame them?

[Rachel]
NO! Of course I don't!

[Woman]
Chances are, they don't blame you either, but themselves.
I'm turning off this tape, Dr. Corrigan. Go and talk to your friends. The
only way you will get through this is with their help. And maybe next time,
you'll be able to handle things differently, and maybe you won't. But you
can take comfort in knowing that you'll always have them.

**********

[Derek]
Rachel had to call me to tell me of the Corvers deaths.
Alex was too hysterical at the time.

[Man]
And when was this?

[Derek]
The day after it happened.

[Man]
And you came right home?

[Derek]
Yes I did.

[Man]
What did you find when you got home?

[Derek]
Five people were dead, Nick was in the hospital, Philip and
Rachel could barely speak to me and Alex had been sedated.

[Man]
I bet you felt responsible for all of this, didn't you?

[Derek]
Of course I did. Just as Rachel felt responsible. Nick felt
responsible. Alex and Philip felt responsible. But we weren't. I see that
now. I wasn't responsible for Julia's death. I wasn't responsible for my
father's death.

[Man]
You seem certain.

[Derek]
I am certain. I didn't create evil. I didn't tell it to
attack the Corvers. I know what you want me to do. You want me to sit here
and tell you how bad I feel.

[Man]
No I don't.

[Derek]
Don't you?

[Man]
No. I want you to get over it and I can see that you are
dealing with this as best you can.

[Derek]
Why do you even care?

[Man]
I care. The Legacy cares. Last fall an investigation in
Dallas of a demonic possession resulted in the deaths of seven people. The
four family members and the three Legacy members investigating it. The
remaining four members of the Dallas Legacy house were not able to deal
with the aftermath very well I'm afraid. One is in a permanent state of
catatonia. One is now an alcoholic living out of a cheap motel. The third
has never been heard from again.

[Derek]
What about the fourth one?

[Man]
I'm the fourth one. Which is why it is important that you
listen to me very carefully. You friends may say they're okay. They may say
they're dealing with it but they're not. Be with them. This will probably
be the worst ordeal they will ever have to go through. Hopefully.

[Derek]
What about the other interviewers? Are they like you?

[Man]
No. I'm in this because I'll die if I don't. Or end up an
alcoholic in a cheap motel. So you listen to me Dr. Rayne.

[Derek]
I am listening. I hear you very clearly.

[Man]
I know. I sure hope, for your sakes, that something like
this will never happen again. And if it does, then next time things won't
turn out to be so tragic.

[Derek]
I hope so too.

[Man]
This interview is over. I'll let the board know that
they're not going to lose their most respected and most extraordinary
Legacy House. I only wish my house had been as strong as yours Mr. Rayne.
