Derek Rayne, PhD.
[ Quotes ]
Birthdate: August 17, 1954
Height:
almost 6'
2" tall.
Physical
Features: hazel
eyes; silvery brown, slightly wavy hair.
Mother: Barbara Rayne (?
Maiden name) who lives in Holland (see
"Ransom" ) and seems to be good friends with
William Sloan.
Father:
Winston
Rayne (deceased) was killed in Peru
(see "Pilot") when Derek was 15 (1968-69)
Sister: Ingrid. She
looks to be a few years older than Derek but we don't
know for sure. (see "Revelations," "Lives
in the Balance" and "Ransom.") She is a
cloistered Nun (probably a Carmelite) in a California
Nunnery and chose to use her "gifts" to help
others through prayer rather than her younger brother's
more direct approach with the Legacy.
Occupations:
- Precept
of San Francisco Legacy House for over 15 Years
- Chairman of the Luna
Foundation
- Biological
Anthropologist Specializing in Forensics
- Former University
Professor (was Alex' mentor and teacher)
Psychic
abilities:
Derek Rayne was born
with psychic abilities (has ESP.) He can acquire
information from an object, has the ability to See an
event happening somewhere else through a vision or more
frequently, has precognitive visions and dreams.
ESP (Extra Sensory
Perception) is the ability to acquire information without
using the regular five senses of the body.
"Perception" can mean anything from
"seeing" or dreaming an event to just having a
gut feeling or an unconscious affect on one's behavior.
Derek Rayne has
clairvoyance and clairaudience - acquisition of visual
and auditory information about a place, event or object
that does not depend on direct contact, although he does
so with objects at times, like a "psychic
detective" using "applied psi." He also
has precognitive ESP, meaning he is able to See future
events.

Other:
Was raised in Europe and
sent to the San Francisco Legacy House to be Precept.
Founded the Winston Rayne
Hall of Antiquities
Did not seem fond of
computers before (first season) but seems to more adept
now in using them in the control room and other technical
equipment.
Derek Rayne (Derek de
Lint) is left-handed (see "Traitor Among Us" -
writing in his journal and "Signalman" when he
dug out an old bullet from the wall with his pocketknife
in his left hand.)
Called the "Anointed
One"
Accomplished pianist -
plays from score or by ear.
Not so great at
translating Latin
Resides at the castle on
Angel Island which is also the SF Legacy House and
apparently offices the Luna Foundation as well, sort of a
philanthropic front that works well for all involved.
"Obstinance is
his strength," according to Father Philip
Callaghan
Derek's first love (which
he kept secret from her and everyone else til
"Twelfth Cave") was Alicia Summers. She was the
fiancee of his best friend and fellow (now former) Legacy
member, Randolph Hitchock (see "Twelfth Cave.")
Alicia was killed in Egypt on a routine mission with
Derek and Randolph. Derek was 22 at the time of her
death. Randolph blames Derek.
Another significant woman
in his past was named Isabelle, which we know nothing
about (see "Black Widow" - Season II)
Another significant love
was Laura, who turned to the darkside, and carried
Derek's child. (see "Lives in the Balance")
A past lover of Derek's
(before he joined The Legacy) was Angeline D'Arcy, with
whom Derek became involved with while both of them were
trying to decided if they wanted to go into The Legacy or
not. She became a Precept of the Montreal House but
turned to the darkside. (see "Ransom") (thanks
Kell for finding Angeline's last name!)
And yet another lover...it
was alluded to in "Traitor Among Us" that he
and Claire Spencer of the Hong Kong House had a fling in
the past too.
Had a very short fling
with Mei Ling in "Fox Spirit," which was
slightly out of character but then again, a man has needs
and being Precept doesn't come with a vow of celibacy!
Alex has admitted to
others that her relationship with Derek (her past mentor
and teacher from college) is "complicated."
(see "The New Guard" - Season II)
Drives '96 black Range
Rover, license plate #35AC461
He's a lousy shot, makes
up rules as he goes along, doesn't tell the Legacy every
case he works on, a maintains tight emotional control.
(see "The New Guard" - Season II)
Apparently has had a long
history of muted animosity with William Sloan. They don't
really hate each other, they just don't agree on
anything. In ways, they are alot alike. No matter how
long either are with The Legacy, they'll never be
"done."
He's been called and
thought of as "impulsive" by Sloan.
Derek kissed Rachel on
Christmas Eve...two lonely people thing.
Derek admits to himself
that he is jealous of those (like Rachel & Kat) who
have families to love and be loved by and wonders if he
will ever have that. (see "The Gift" II)
Enemies:
Randolph Hitchcock
(see "Twelfth Cave") blames Derek for his
fiancee's death. Holds a huge grudge about it but does
not seem to be innatedly evil.
Arkady/Arkadi
(see "Bones of St. Anthony") is a greedy, evil
man with not much sense of right and wrong. He
"comes from an old wealthy family that made it's
money by practicing the 'black arts'. Arkady is bent on
his own advancement, even if it means going over the
Legacy to do it." - Mark/from FAQ Q&A

Quotes:
In the Pilot, while
squaring off with a likeness of his father, sword in
hand, Derek says: "You have no power over
me!"
"...and when she
died, it was as if the world opened up and you could hear
the sounds...cries of the damned... voices screaming. It
was horrible." - Derek Rayne told Rachel about
Alicia's death (see "Twelfth Cave")
" 'I do not
believe in a fate that falls on man however they act; but
I do believe in a fate that falls on them unless they
act.' " - Derek quoting his father (see
"Signalman.")
" 'When you have
eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however
improbable, must be the truth.' " - Derek
quoted Sherlock Holmes (see "Signalman.")
"There are few
things in this world of which I'm certain. For every
darkness in life, there is light; for every evil, there
is good; there is a God in Heaven." - Derek
states this credo at Julia's funeral (see
"Pilot.")
To Philip: "My
friend. You would forgive the devil if he came to you for
absolution, but you won't forgive yourself." -
(see "Pilot")
Upon seeing London
Precept, William Sloan: "My God. I've finally
made it to Hell." Then Sloan says: "You
look like hell." Derek replies: "I was
shot. What's your excuse?" (see "The New
Guard" - Season II)
In reply to Damon
Ballards' suggestion that Derek "Go to Hell": "Why,
is that where I'll find the answer?" (see
"Sins of the Father")
"Satan hasn't
risen to take over the world, so we must be doing
something right." Derek told Alex to tell the
Ruling House after Alex badgers him to review and sign
the quarterly reports which are overdue. (see "Black
Widow")
In reference to the
mysterious box which was delivered to the SF Legacy
House: "Well, I think the damned thing is
haunted!" (see "Lights Out")
"If I was wrong,
I would apologize. But you have to know one thing,
Rachel Corrigan. I would never, ever intentionally hurt
you. Never."
Spoken to Rachel (see "The Gift".)
"Christmas Eve.
We had the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future.
We had sorrow and happiness, grief and joy, loss and
reunion, and love and jealousy. The jealousy was mine.
Its funny. Ive hated ghosts, feared them,
been awed by them. This is the first time Ive ever
been envious. I wonder if Ill ever be lucky enough
to have a family that will love me that much."
Written in his journal in "The Gift".
"Keep your
friends close, but your enemies closer", Derek
quoting an old saying to Nick in "Dark Angel,"
referring to Dr. Praetorius.
"I found out I
was more like my father than I wanted to admit - driven,
obsessed. I wanted to know everything about everything -
science, ancient civilizations, religions - and then I
fell into teaching." Derek explaining his
childhood to his "son" Lucas in "Lives in
the Balance."
"I finally found
something worth dying for," Derek explaining to
Lucas why he joined the Luna Foundation in "Lives in
the Balance."
"Since my return
from the day at the river, I have known no peace. Though
my mind assures me that Lucas was never real, my heart
cannot forget his face and I long for all that might have
been." From Dereks Legacy Journal in
"Lives in the Balance."
"You think that
was your weakness, that you were concerned about your
sister? That you were willing to risk yourself for your
family? Thats not your weakness, thats your
strength!" Sloan trying to calm Derek down in
"Ransom."
"Theres too
much of your father in you. I knew the moment you made
your decision to join the Legacy that youd never be
happy doing anything else. So dont tell me
youre sorry about the choices youve
made!" Barbara Rayne, speaking to Derek in
"Ransom."
"Angelyne said
that by joining the dark side all our human bonds would
become meaningless family, friends, loyal colleagues
nothing. If thats true, I can think of no greater
evil in the world and no force the Legacy must strive
harder to overcome." Quote from Dereks
Legacy Journal in "Ransom."
"When we lose a
friend, we lose more than that, we lose a part of
ourselves. A part of our own past. But sometimes we also
find something new a deeper appreciation of the
friends that remain and of the bonds only time can
forge." Dereks Legacy Journal entry in
"Someone to Watch Over Me."
"My thought for
the day is that maybe there are some things that are
better off left alone
Einstein warned the world to
tread lightly. Carl Sagan has said weve learned to
regret some of our discoveries." Derek telling
Rachel he felt William shouldnt have pursued his
course of action in "Let Sleeping Demons Lie."
Nick, in "Trapped",
talking about Derek to Sloan, "He holds his cards
close to his chest
its his way."
Sloan replies, "It will be his downfall." Sloan,
in "Trapped," talking about Derek, "Given
Dereks track record with the Legacy, Id say
any number of evil entities are gunning for him.
Ill bet the devil himself has issues hed like
to discuss with him."
Evil Winston Rayne,
talking about Derek, in "Trapped."
"Dereks always been a disappointment to
me."
"The knowledge
that my father was in league with forces of darkness is
the most heartbreaking revelation of my life. But William
Sloans courage gives me renewed faith in our cause.
And as far as Im concerned, William Sloan will
always be a member of this Legacy. And I will find a way
to free him from wherever he is trapped."
Dereks Legacy Journal entry in "Trapped."
"Some things must
be left to fate." Spoken by Derek to Nick and
Alex, discussing whether Rachel will leave in "The
Choice."
Mega-thanks to Emmalee for giving me her massive list
of data that was the beginnings of the character and
archive pages and for the Season Two quotes. Thanks to Donna deBoer and others for Season Two quotes as well.
